US Economy Keeps Accelerating — But Something’s Shifting

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) — FRED Economic Data Chart

The US economy expanded at a 6.04% annual pace in Q4, capping off a year that saw GDP growth consistently surprise to the upside. That’s the kind of momentum that usually comes with warning labels.

Here’s what’s interesting: this wasn’t driven by the usual suspects. Consumer spending growth actually decelerated compared to earlier quarters, yet overall GDP kept accelerating. The real story is happening in business investment and productivity gains — companies are deploying capital at rates we haven’t seen since the late 1990s tech boom. When businesses invest aggressively while consumers pull back slightly, it suggests the economy is shifting from consumption-led growth to investment-led growth. That’s typically a healthier, more sustainable pattern.

But 6% nominal growth with inflation still running above target creates a puzzle for the Fed. Real GDP growth — after adjusting for inflation — is probably closer to 3.5-4%, which is still well above the long-term trend of around 2%. This kind of above-trend growth historically doesn’t last without either triggering inflation or hitting capacity constraints.

Many professional investors are watching this dynamic closely. When growth is strong but shifting in composition, it often signals a transition period where different sectors and asset classes start performing differently. Historically, periods of robust business investment have favored value stocks over growth stocks, and industrial companies over consumer discretionary.

Bottom Line: The economy is running hot, but it’s running hot in the right way — through productivity and investment rather than just spending. The question is whether this pace is sustainable or if we’re borrowing growth from future quarters.
