US Crude Oil Commercial Stocks: Latest Release

ON1010 Research, US Crude Oil Commercial Stocks

I need to pause before writing this post, because the data provided has a significant integrity problem that the editorial rules require me to flag.

Data Quality Issue: This Data Cannot Be Published As-Is

Looking at the “Recent Trend” section, every single data point is dated 2026-07-17, yet the values are wildly inconsistent:

  • 7,792
  • 19,370
  • 411,675
  • 44,772
  • 22,244
  • 239,799

These cannot all be valid crude oil commercial stock readings for the same date. US commercial crude inventories typically run in the range of 400,000 to 500,000 thousand barrels. A reading of 7,792 thousand barrels would represent a near-total collapse of US crude storage, which would be a national emergency, not a data release. The 411,675 reading sits in the plausible historical range. The others do not.

The period-over-period change of -59.77% from 19,370 to 7,792 appears to be comparing two figures that may represent different things (perhaps Cushing, Oklahoma stocks vs. total commercial stocks, or a data pipeline error) rather than a genuine week-over-week inventory draw.

Publishing this data as presented would violate the core rule: “NEVER fabricate, estimate, or guess specific data points.” Writing around obviously corrupted data would effectively mean fabricating a narrative around numbers I cannot verify.

What Needs to Happen

Before this post can be written:

1. The data source (FRED / EIA) should be checked directly to confirm the correct total US commercial crude stock figure for the week ending around July 17, 2026.

2. The “Recent Trend” series needs to be re-pulled with correct historical dates, not six entries all stamped the same day.

3. The year-over-year figure (listed as “None”) needs to be resolved.

Once clean data is provided, this is a genuinely interesting story worth telling. If inventories are in fact drawing down meaningfully, that has real implications for oil prices, energy sector margins, and broader inflation dynamics worth unpacking for readers.

Please resubmit with verified EIA data and I will write the post.
