The Wednesday Memo

September added 29,000 jobs. The story underneath that number is more useful.

When payrolls stall, look at what is still growing and what has quietly stopped.

Wednesday · October 14, 2026 · Volume 1, No. 20

The September jobs report landed two weeks ago with a headline that describes a labor market that has stopped accelerating: nonfarm payrolls rose by only 29,000, below the 45,000 average monthly gain of the prior twelve months, and the unemployment rate held at 4.2 percent. We think this shift matters more for your wage costs than for your revenue: when hiring slows broadly, competition for workers eases and the upward pressure on your largest operating expense starts to come off, but consumer caution tends to arrive at the same time and compress the order sizes your customers place.

The 29,000 number deserves context before it drives any conclusion. One month of weak payrolls is noise until it repeats. What gives it more weight is the surrounding evidence. Job openings in August sat at 7.1 million, which is still a historically comfortable level, but hires were 5.2 million against 5.1 million separations, leaving a thin net flow of new employment. The gap between open positions and actual hiring tells you firms are posting but pulling back on committing, a cautious posture you recognize if you have been through a cycle before.

Temporary staffing employment, which we watch as an early indicator because companies add temps before permanent workers and cut them first, stands at about 2.49 million. That level matters because temporary hiring tends to lead the broader payroll trend by several months in each direction. A sustained softening there would give you earlier warning of a harder payroll slowdown than the headline number alone.
