Tech Sold Off Hard Yesterday. The VIX Tells You Something Bigger Is Moving.
The Nasdaq dropped 1.47% Thursday, more than three times the S&P 500’s decline of 0.51%. That’s not a broad market selloff. That’s a rotation, and it’s worth paying attention to where the money is actually going.
Sector data tells the story clearly. Technology is running 7.0 percentage points behind the S&P 500 over the recent period, while Health Care is outperforming by 6.6 points and Financials are matching that same gain. All four defensive sectors are beating the index right now. Institutional money is moving, quietly but decisively, toward safer ground.
The VIX jumped 10.46% Thursday, closing at 18.48. That’s a meaningful one-session move for a volatility index that had been sitting at 15.87 the prior day. It’s not a panic reading, but a VIX climbing while tech sells off and defensives lead is a combination worth watching. The 10-year Treasury sits at 4.55%, with a 41-basis-point spread over the 2-year at 4.13%. Gold pulled back slightly to $3,999.40 from $4,038.30 the prior session, a small move but notable given the risk-off tone elsewhere.
On deck today: no major scheduled data prints, so markets will trade off positioning and sentiment into the weekend close.
The constructive setup still holds, the S&P 500 is trading above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, but rotation out of growth and into defense is the signal worth sitting with heading into next week.
The deeper read on what rotation patterns like this have meant for the economic cycle lands Sunday in The Long View. Free to join, and worth your weekend.
