The Economy Is Still Growing. So Why Is Money Moving to the Exits?

Here is the puzzle heading into the final session of the week: jobless claims just hit their lowest recent reading, yet institutional money is quietly rotating away from growth and into defense. The economy and the market are sending different signals, and that gap is worth watching.

Yesterday’s jobs data was genuinely good. Claims dropped to 187,000 for the week ending July 18, a fall of 22,000 from the prior week. That is a healthy labor market by any measure. But the S&P 500 fell 1.21% to 7,408.30, the Nasdaq dropped 2.15% to 25,138, and sector rotation data shows Health Care outperforming the broad market by 5.5 percentage points while Technology trailed by 3.7 points. That is a defensive tilt. Oil pulled back to $88.94 from $89.93 the session before, and the 10-year yield sits at 4.67%, well above where it started the month.

On deck today: no specific data releases appear in our confirmed sources for Friday, July 24, 2026, so earnings commentary and any fresh trade headlines are likely to drive the tape.

When the economy looks fine but money rotates toward health care and utilities, it often reflects a shift in how institutional investors are reading the forward picture, not the current one. Markets tend to move ahead of the data.

Sunday’s Long View goes deeper on exactly this: what rotation patterns like this one have meant for where economic cycles turn. It is free, and it is worth your time.
