Oil Falls Hard. Here’s the Inflation Angle Nobody Is Talking About.

ON1010 Research — The Morning Bell

Oil just dropped nearly 6% in a single session. Most of the coverage will focus on Iran. The more interesting story is what a $79 oil price means for an inflation gauge that is still running hotter than roughly nine of every ten months on record.

What moved. WTI crude closed at $79.73 per barrel, down $4.94 or 5.8%, as Iran de-escalation hopes pulled the geopolitical risk premium out of the price. Gasoline at the pump followed, with RBOB futures falling 6.0% to $3.03 per gallon. The 10-year Treasury yield sits at 4.68%, well above the 2-year at 4.23%, giving a positive spread of 47 basis points. The S&P 500 finished at 7,489.72, up 0.70%, while small caps (Russell 2000 at 2,931.34) slipped 0.50%.

On deck today. No major economic reports are scheduled for Monday, August 03, 2026, so markets will digest the oil move and watch whether Treasury yields continue drifting lower, as they began doing late last week.

Why it matters. Energy is one of the fastest pass-through channels in the inflation pipeline. When oil prices fall sharply, gasoline costs drop within weeks, which pulls headline CPI lower even if core services inflation stays sticky. That creates a real-vs-nominal puzzle worth watching: lower headline numbers can look like progress even when the underlying inflation story has barely budged.
